A 30-year-old woman at 34 weeks' gestation presented with a 3-day history of fever accompanied by chills, nausea, and vomiting. Her blood pressure was normal; there was no febrile tachycardia. On admission, her white blood cell count was 4.4 × 103/μL with 3% bands and 74% neutrophils, her hemoglobin was 11.0 g/dL, and her platelet count was 63 × 109/L. Her human immunodeficiency virus test was negative. On day 2 of admission, her temperature rose to 38.8°C, resulting in fetal bradycardia, requiring emergency cesarean section.
