In the present study, silkworm was used as a model animal to evaluate the pathogenicity of Staphylococcus aureus. Fifth instar silkworm larvae were used and infected by intrahemocytic injection of bacterial sample. Hemolymph was collected from larvae of infected and control groups at 6, 12, 18 and 24 hours after infection and stored at -4°C in Eppendorf tubes for use. Lipid peroxidation, phenoloxidase and acid phosphatase activities were evaluated in the hemolymph of control and infected groups. It showed that there was a gradual increase in lipid peroxidation, phenoloxidase and acid phosphatase activities in the infected group compared with the control group. Antioxidant enzyme activities were evaluated in the hemolymph of control and infected groups. We found that antioxidant enzyme activities decreased at 24 hours after S. aureus infection. Silk glands were removed and their wet weight was measured. Silk gland wet weight was decreased 24 hours after infection compared to the control group.
